Is Ron Paul becoming more of a politician?
The appeal of Ron Paul has always been that he wasn’t like those other politicians. Agree with him or not (I don’t), he commands respect by being principled and standing firmly for it. He has a strong (but small) base on both the left and the right because of that. However the electoral appeal of his idea’s aren’t as broad as most supporters would seem to think. Most people actually want government to regulate and help them from time to time. Even the federal governemnt is broadly accepted on a limited basis. Some government intervention in the market is common sense for most people. That is because the premise of Paul’s idea’s rest on the Homo Economicus, the concept of man as a rational decision maker. In that world view the market would work perfectly in efficiently allocating resources. However, the facts show a different picture. People are louzy decision makers and therefore markets sometimes work really inefficiently. A lot of American’s realize that and therefore Ron Paul isn’t that popular as some of his fans seem to believe. The race in Florida proves that because Paul only gathered a weak 7% of the votes. Now he is betting on the caucas-states. He is likely to do better there (because of his loyal fanbase), but he can’t escape the fact that you need to win votes among the general public. In his speech after the Florida primary we could see that Paul has realised this. His retoric sounded more like an ordinary politician that his previous, more down to earth style. Just watch this clip. His retoric more bloated with big promises, just like ordinary politicians. This didn’t happen overnight though. Paul allready lost a bit of his iron consistency during some of the debates. For instance when discussing the uninsured comapatient he started by saying that it is his own reponsibility to insure himself and know one else should pay for him. When asked if the hospital should then just let the patient die he wiggled and muddyed things a bit. It wasn’t that consistent Paul that we have come to love (even if you don’t agree with him). This is just an example, but there are more of them. Perhaps Ron Paul will become a politicians after all. Perhaps it is his only chance to really win. We’ll see.
